Department Summary The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including neuroscience, genetics, cell and developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and marine biology. Our undergraduate curriculum provides an introductory overview into each of these areas and provides the opportunity for advanced training and specialization in particular areas through course work and research experience. The research activities of the department are centered in four separate research institutes. These Institutes bring faculty from Biology and other departments with biological interests into contiguous lab space. The University supports interdepartmental connections among Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, and Human Physiology. Position Summary This is a full time, 9-month fixed-term position starting September 2017. The Lab Preparator is a high level professional position with specialized expertise and technical skills that functions as a subject matter expert to facilitate Biology education at the undergraduate and graduate student level in a unit serving over 1200 undergraduate majors and over 100 graduate students. This position has primary responsibility and broad authority for all aspects of the unit\’s instructional lab prep including the health, safety, equipment, and supply needs for the associated classes. The Lab Preparator manages the two lab prep work areas, eight Biology-owned classrooms, and supervises 8-12 student employees. The position responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests from a variety of constituents. The position reports to the Department of Biology Curriculum Director but works independently under minimal supervision. Position independently performs laboratory work including developing, implementing, and troubleshooting lab exercises, setting up and maintaining equipment and supplies for Biology courses, collecting/ordering all materials and supplies needed for laboratories, setting up weekly lab exercises in lab room, assists in labs/discussions, acts as grader, supervises students in labs, attends lectures, copies materials for classes, and assists on field trips. Works closely with the instructor in preparation of class assignments and maintaining class lecture/lab schedules. As necessary may act as assistant to the instructor in Biology classes. The position may require work hours outside of the normal work week (ie, evenings and Saturdays/Sundays). Eligible for full benefits. Budget Authority: This position does not have budget authority but makes recommendations for lab prep student employee budget, course fees, field trip fees, and instructional equipment purchases. Decision Making Authority: Has the authority and responsibility to make decisions related to the efficient operation of the Huestis and Klamath lab prep rooms, the stockroom, the Biology-owned instructional classrooms, and the instructional lab experience, and regularly exercises discretion in decision making related to Biology instructional lab prep. Minimum Requirements • Minimum of Bachelor\’s degree in Biology or related field required Professional Competencies • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. • Advanced knowledge in Biology instructional lab preparation. • Proven ability to work in complex frameworks, analyze and prioritize elevated levels of information and convert ideas and objectives into actions. • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and written with a diverse population. • Ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt well to changes. • Ability to assess situation independently and determine what steps are required. Preferred Qualifications • Laboratory teaching or laboratory preparation experience preferred. FLSA Exempt: Yes
