CONTEXT OF JOB: Under the general direction of the Director and primary supervision by the Lab Coordinator, the Senior Lab Technician will assist in the implementation of the educational program of the Interdisciplinary Science Learning Laboratories (ISLL) by ensuring all laboratory and class material support is provided which involves various combinations of biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and physics pedagogical innovations. The Senior Laboratory Technician will have a strong background in many science disciplines and be expected to collaborate closely with laboratory technicians and managers in Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Physics to ensure that all requisite materials and support is available as we deliver world-class interdisciplinary and collaborative science curriculum in cutting edge facilities. Under limited supervision, assists faculty members, Preceptors, and graduate students in preparing and implementing all laboratory activities in the ISE Lab (generally about 100 lab sections per week). Independent judgment and thorough understanding of the application of scientific techniques are required.   MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Prepares experiments, assembles equipment, constructs and demonstrates use of teaching apparatus for all chemistry/biochemistry, biology, physics and microbiology integrated lab scenarios.
  • Prepares chemical reagents, solutions, media and reagents for quantitative use in instructional laboratories
  • Responsible for safety training and compliance particularly adhering to the chemical and biological use protocol.
  • Attends and conducts certain aspects of laboratory staff meetings during the Fall and Spring semesters, and during the Winter and two Summer Sessions.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment which may include troubleshooting and making minor repairs; ensures equipment is in working order.
  • Maintains and controls inventories; initiates orders; receives, checks and stocks all orders of supplies and/or parts and equipment.
  • Maintains and cares for laboratory plants and animals for assigned courses.
  • Assist in pick up and deliveries of supplies.
  • Assist with development and testing of new investigative lab equipment. Coordinates with department machinist to facilitate construction of required number of replications.
  • Assists with the writing of protocols for student experiments for the lab manuals and syllabi.
  • Keeps records and writes reports as required.
  • Observes and monitors students in instructional labs checking that good safety practices are followed including monitoring students in the use of toxic or corrosive materials.
  • Responds to student inquiries.
  • Supervises other unit personnel, such as student workers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
ENVIRONMENTAL/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor\’s degree in a field of science and 2-3 years of laboratory support experience. related progressive experience beyond a high school diploma or GED may be substituted for required education.
  • Basic computer skills (spreadsheets, real-time data acquisition devices, word processing, etc.).
  • Knowledge of instructional methods.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Familiarity with use of appropriate supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team of faculty members, preceptors, graduate teaching assistants, undergraduate fellows, and students enrolled in courses.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to have flexibility regarding scheduled work hours from semester to semester depending on current course requirements. Must have a valid vehicle operator’s license for pick up and deliveries of supplies. Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials and the ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials. In certain units, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
