College Laboratory Technician – Biology

GENERAL DUTIES

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.
  • Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories
  • Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials
  • Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards
  • Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities
  • Manages equipment and materials inventories.
 

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Reporting to the Chief College Laboratory Technician of Biology, the College Laboratory Technician will perform, in addition to the above, the following duties:
  • Set up and maintain the laboratories for undergraduates in General Biology.
  • Assist faculty in the design, development and testing of new experiments in these laboratories.
  • Prepare of all reagents, buffers, solutions, media, cultures, slides, stains and similar materials required for assigned courses.
  • Maintain safety and hygiene standards in the laboratories.
  • Maintain working order of all specialized instructional equipment used for both undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Maintain lab equipment including regular routine damage inspection and preventive maintenance to ensure safe storage and use of all equipment and materials required by appropriate courses are in good condition and working order.
  • Troubleshoot problems or answer questions that may arise during the laboratory sessions.
  • Preserve viable stocks of living cultures including plants, bacteria, drosophila, and invertebrates as required by the Department for use in its courses.
  • Ensure that classroom/laboratory are fully stocked and equipped with all required materials, equipment, supplies, cultures and stocks as designated prior to the start of each class.
  • Responsible for any special demonstration projects required.
  • Maintain the teaching laboratory spaces before and after classes including removing, storing, and/or disposing non-hazardous waste, materials, and other cultures or living material as appropriate and as designated.
  • Store materials and equipment in good condition and in an appropriate fashion.
  • Track and maintain an inventory of all equipment and supplies so that repairs, maintenance and replacements can be ordered in a timely fashion.
  • Pre-test all new exercises and experiments before they are used in courses to ensure that all reagents, equipment, etc., are satisfactory and of good quality.
  • Ensure that the College and department safety protocols are followed when using materials and equipment in lab courses as well as identify and report actual or potential health/safety hazards or incidents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years\’ related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor\’s degree may be substituted for four years experience.
