Greenhouse Manager

Position Summary
Responsible for management and maintenance of a 6-room greenhouse in excellent horticultural and aesthetic condition and oversees outreach activities and public programs for the greenhouse. Also responsible for the plant collections and propagating plants for undergraduate courses and maintains courtyard and living walls. Ensures that teaching laboratories are properly supplied, equipped and maintained for the undergraduate ecology course.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree preferably in applied plant science or horticulture or equivalent (bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience). Professional experience with greenhouses or related facilities. Ability to identify plant species and have working knowledge of plant nomenclature, labeling, accessioning and record keeping.
A passion for horticulture, nature, and servicing the clientele of the gardens and greenhouse.
Basic understanding of equipment and tools, including their care and maintenance.
Ability to manage priorities and create strong relations with stakeholders. Basic computing skills.
Excellent communication skills including interpersonal, verbal, written and listening.
Ability to present a positive public image.
Ability to work well with others including students, staff, faculty, administrators, and the public.
Must have license to handle pesticides or ability to obtain one within six months of hiring.
Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Three years of progressively increasing management experiences with greenhouses or related facilities.
Previous experience in preparing materials and supplying biology labs.
Experience supervising student workers.
Established network of professional colleagues within the horticultural community.
Duties & Responsibilities
Manages the facility operations of a predominantly teaching greenhouse, courtyard beds, and the living walls, ensuring excellent horticultural condition.
Ensures that greenhouse environmental controls are operating properly and that pests are controlled.
Facilitates use of greenhouse for teaching and for student/faculty research.
Coordinates outreach activities and use of the facilities by the community.
Manages all fiscal activities with specific accountability for expenditures within budget.
Develops and maintains educational materials and signage for greenhouse displays.
Works with faculty to maintain teaching materials, order laboratory supplies and sets-up/breaks-down laboratory for BIO 213 Foundations of Ecology and other science courses requiring plants.
Trains, directs, and motivates student workers.
Works occasional weekends and evenings.
Other duties as assigned.
