The main campus is in West Lafayette, Indiana (126 miles southeast of Chicago, 65 miles north of Indianapolis). Can be reached by flying to Indianapolis or Chicago, by Greyhound Bus or by car.

Purdue is a public, doctoral-granting research university, and Indiana’s land-, sea-, and space-grant university. Purdue University is a coeducational, state-assisted system in Indiana. Founded in 1869 and named after benefactor John Purdue, the University is one of the nation’s leading research institutions with a reputation for excellent and affordable education.

Building upon historical strengths in engineering and agriculture, the West Lafayette campus currently offers 7,400 courses in more than 500 undergraduate majors and specializations in the Colleges of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, Management, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences, Science, Technology, and Veterinary Medicine. Programs of graduate study and research leading to advanced degrees fall under the jurisdiction of the Graduate School

DRIVING TO PURDUE

Lafayette/West Lafayette can be reached from Indianapolis and Chicago on Interstate 65. From the north (Chicago) exit at US 43 and take it to the West Lafayette campus. From the south (Indianapolis) exit at US 26 and take it to the campus in West Lafayette.

CONFERENCE HOUSING

The Union Club is a full-service hotel in the Memorial Union.We have reserved rooms that will accommodate a maximum of 3 or 4 people. All Union Club accommodations include private baths, air-conditioning, and cable television. In addition, the Union Club features a pull-up off-street entrance, an attractive lobby, an exercise room, and free garage parking.

Purdue’s student residence halls provide air-conditioned double and single rooms. These facilities include a high-rise graduate residence hall (Hawkins) across the street from Stewart Center. Parking at Hawkins is $1.00 per night for residents. Hawkins Residence Hall provides active phone service for local calls and credit card calls.

HOUSING COSTS

Campus housing can be chosen from Purdue Campus Residence Hawkins Hall or the Union Club Hotel.

Union Club

Hawkins Graduate House (Daily towel service, weekly linen change)

  • Normal Single $41.25
  • Normal Double $27.25

People staying at the Graduate House can park in the parking lot for an additional $1 per day. There is a 6% Sales Tax and a 5% County Innkeeper’s Tax for all stays less than 30 days.

HOTELS AND MOTELS

ABLE has made arrangements with the Hilton Garden Inn West Lafayette Wabash Landing (1.5 mile from campus) for special rates for ABLE 2006 participants. Reservations should be made directly with the hotel. There is a local shuttle that stops at the Hilton Garden Inn about every 15 minutes from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Check the conference web site for details.

There are many area hotels within a 5-6 mile distance from Purdue’s campus with rates ranging from $48 to $140. You may contact them directly from the hotel web site, or the Lafayette Visitor’s web site.

PARKING

Parking is strictly controlled on the Purdue Campus. Those staying in the Graduate Student housing can park in the housing parking lot for $1 per day. Those staying in the Union Club can park free in the next door Grant Street Parking Garage. Parking on campus after 5 pm is free in the garages, lots and staff parking except for numbered spaces.

FOOD

ABLE 2006 will not offer a meal plan. The Purdue Memorial Union offers a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner selections.

  • Union Market — An array of specialty food stations featuring hot entrees, carved-to-order oven roasted specialties, Indian and Asian foods, grilled sandwiches, stir-fry selections, Sara Lee deli, homemade soups, salad bar, fresh baked breads, cookies and desserts.
  • Stripe Shop — Pizza and bread sticks on the go, fast carry-out service.
  • Pappys — Serves burgers, grilled sandwiches, fries, assorted snacks and Starbucks coffee.
  • Sagamore Room — On the second floor of the PMU; a slightly more up-scale room for lunch that provides sandwiches, a soup and salad buffet or a hot buffet, and gourmet desserts.

A number of inexpensive restaurants are located 2 – 4 blocks from the Memorial Union. Several excellent restaurants are located in downtown Lafayette and can be reached by car or shuttle

LOCATION OF WORKSHOPS, BANQUETS, COMPUTER ROOMS

Most of the workshops, receptions, banquet, and computer rooms are within easy walking distance of Hawkins Graduate House and the Union Club. Lilly Hall of Biological Sciences will be the headquarters for the conference. The opening reception and banquet will be in the Student Memorial Union Ballroom.

Please let us know on your registration form if you will attend the
opening reception and the ice cream social.  There is no fee for these
but we would like to know the number attending.  The ticket for the
banquet is not included in your registration fee and must be purchased separately on the registration form.

TOURS, FIELD TRIPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

Tuesday tours

T-1 Celery Bog is a unique wetlands area where visitors will find some unusual plants and the opportunity to view different species of birds as well as rabbits, opossums and other small mammals. This tranquil spot for wildlife has a 4 mile paved walking trail and a 1 mile footpath with interpretive signs. A 30 minute van drive from campus.

T-2 Prophetstown State Park.  Indiana’s newest state park encompasses nearly 1900 acres and opened in 2004. Camping, hiking, birding and biking can be enjoyed. This park is unique because of the areas of prairie, prairie wildflower beds, and the seeps and fens of the wetlands. A 45 minute van drive from campus.

T-3 Purdue Tree Walk
Our walking tour consists of three trails designed to show the variety of trees on Purdue’s campus. Each tree on the actual trail is identified by a small wooden post and a coinciding number. Some trees have both numbers and letters, indicating that they are a small distance from the actual trail.

T-4 Boiler Bug Barn
The Boiler Bug Barn opened in January 2006. Located in Smith Hall, Room 124 the Boiler Bug Barn features a number of live and pinned insects along with exciting educational exhibits on insect control, insect damage, insects as food, and insect products.

Saturday tours

S-1 Crawfordsville Strawberry Festival and Tree Tour.  Visit a typical mid-west city festival.  June is strawberry month so sample the strawberry short cake and find a souvenir from the local handicrafts.  Various local groups perform songs, dancing, and music during the day.  We will also stop at the only revolving jail in the country and if time permits, we will visit a local native hardwood woods.  The creek that goes through the woods is also a good place to find fossil crinoids, brachiopods, etc.  You can also see damage done by beaver activity. A 45 minute drive from campus.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Tuesday evening
Opening Reception. 
The meeting opens on Tuesday evening with a reception including heavy hors d’oveurs (watch for the mashed potato bar), free soft drinks and cash bar.  Meet old friends and make new friends.  You will be welcomed by Purdue University officials.
The reception will be held in the Student Union starting at 6:30 PM.

Wednesday evening
Wolf Park and Wolf Howl. 
Wednesday evening we will board buses at 6:30 PM to take us to Wolf Park for a special evening presentation of wolf behavior.  Visitors will be treated to a brief talk about our red foxes, and then will be invited to sit on the bleachers in front of our main pack enclosure, which is about seven acres in size and has between three and ten wolves in it. There are lights on in the enclosure and you will be able to see the animals. There will be a talk about wolf behavior and communication, focusing on the howl, and then a handling demonstration, where some staff will enter the enclosure and interact with the wolves.  Between three and five times during the performance you will be invited to howl and the wolves will join in. A 30 minute bus trip from campus.

Banquet.  The meeting will end with the annual banquet.  This year it will be in the Student Memorial Union ballroom.  After the meal, a local instructor will teach us line dancing.
