Grants and Waivers: Spread the Word!

Grants-in-Aid and Conference Registration Waivers are important methods for recruiting new members and generating future workshops. Therefore, as the current Chair of the Grants-in-Aid Committee, I need your help in disseminating information about these initiatives to your colleagues and graduate students, both in your department and at other educational institutions in your region.

Grants-in-Aid

The ABLE Grants-in-Aid Committee invites proposals for grants of up to $2000 to develop and implement lab exercises. The purpose of these grants is to encourage, support, and acknowledge developments in biology laboratory teaching at the post-secondary level. The 2003 recipient of the Lab Initiative Grant was Ann Yezerski of King's College in Pennsylvania. Ann received a grant of $1,500 for her proposal, entitled Molecular Genetic Linkage Mapping for Undergraduates.

To be eligible for submission of a proposal, the candidate must be (1) affiliated with a two- or four-year post-secondary institution as faculty, staff, or graduate student (2) currently teaching an undergraduate life science course and (3) able to attend an ABLE conference within the next two years to present the project as an ABLE major or mini workshop. Candidates are not required to be a current ABLE member. Examples of activities that are “fundable” include, but are not limited to: designing new labs, improving existing labs, developing pedagogical techniques for teaching in a laboratory setting, or developing multi-media tools. Highest priority will be given to proposals that are innovative and adaptable to being taught at other institutions. Priorities for funding will be equipment, supplies, and materials necessary to complete the project. The grants are not meant to support normal laboratory activities of an instructor such as revising lab manuals, reviewing literature, repairing equipment or one-time-only activities such as field trips, speakers, or multi-media rentals. Salaries are also less likely to be funded.

Interested applicants will find a more detailed description of the grant program and an application form on the ABLE website. The deadline for submissions is May 3, 2004. The selection and notification of recipients will be by June 28, 2004. All inquires and submissions should be addressed to Bill Glider, School of Biological Sciences, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 68588-0118; e-mail wglider1@unl.edu; phone: 402-472-6242. Electronic submission of proposals via e-mail is strongly encouraged.

Conference Registration Waivers

These grants are designed to encourage attendance at the annual Workshop/Conference by graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, new academic staff, and staff from community colleges. The grants will cover the cost of registration at the annual ABLE meeting in a given year. Interested applicants should complete the Waiver of Registration form. The completed form and a letter of support from the Head of the applicant’s Department should be sent to: Bill Glider, School of Biological Sciences, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska 68588-0118; 402-472-6242; wglider1@unl.edu. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2004. Successful recipients will be notified by April 12, 2004.
