Aurora University is an independent, comprehensive institution founded in 1893 offering bachelor\’s, master\’s, and doctoral degrees. Our two campuses are located in Aurora, Illinois and on the shores of Geneva Lake in Wisconsin. Additionally, we have an Educational Center in Woodstock, Illinois. To facilitate this highly interactive faculty/student relationship, the typical teaching load is three 4 credit-hour courses per semester and student advising is supported by professional staff. Evidence of successful teaching, or a strong potential for successful teaching, is required for all positions. Undergraduate faculty share in the delivery of the general education program, most often by teaching within the university\’s interdisciplinary core. Aurora University’s STEM Agenda In recent years, Aurora University has earned national recognition as an innovator in STEM education. Drawing on a unique vision of public-private partnership and the great resources of the Chicago metropolitan area, our faculty have developed ground-breaking STEM curricula for students in primary, secondary and tertiary education. The Department of Biology has been instrumental in this and other efforts to advance the university’s STEM agenda. The expectations of the campus community are high. The department works closely with the School of Nursing and Allied Health, and the School of Education and Human Performance. It further collaborates with the new Human Animal Studies program. In addition, Biology offers exciting majors preparing students for further study in graduate or professional school. Through its STEM and pre-professional programs, the university has attracted strong students from diverse backgrounds. As a service department with a large number of majors in its own right, Biology will play a crucial role in our efforts to expand the recruitment of highly qualified students. It will also be critical in helping the university achieve its mission of transforming lives through education. Many of our students are first generation and from disadvantaged backgrounds. Biology and our other STEM programs enable these students significantly to improve their lives by preparing them for careers in healthcare, industry, and in scientific research. Chicagoland is home to numerous healthcare providers, biomedical and biotechnical firms, medical schools and first-rate graduate programs in the sciences. The Biology Chair/Pre-Professional Advisor Position We seek a qualified, dedicated, passionate and innovative professional to become the next chair of the Biology Department and to serve as its advisor for the new premedical degree. The successful candidate will have excellent teaching skills, experience in supervising faculty, and a proven record of developing, managing and marketing a successful pre-professional program. In addition to teaching, the faculty member will be expected to participate in curricular development, program assessment, student mentoring, and engage in institutional service, scholarship, and university STEM education initiatives. A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Human Biology or related discipline is required. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate teaching effectiveness and a strong commitment to student learning.
