JOB DESCRIPTION: Manages the instructional laboratory components for all courses in the Department of Biology.?Hires, trains and supervises staff of work-study students.  Fulfills the preparation needs of faculty in laboratory courses and manages the maintenance of laboratory infrastructure in both teaching and research laboratories.  Ensures the preparation and availability of teaching materials, reagents, media, samples, specimens and equipment. Maintains chemical inventories for the teaching laboratories.  Participates in the development of instructional materials and protocols. Maintains laboratory safety standards in compliance with organizational and federal guidelines, including weekly testing of teaching laboratory eyewash stations and fume hoods. Maintains supply and preparation facility for introductory biology courses.  Supervises the maintenance of laboratory infrastructure including (but not limited to) autoclaves, ice machines, drying ovens, thermocyclers, refrigerators, freezers, a greenhouse facility, deionization water filtration systems, biological incubators, biological safety hoods, fume hoods, micropipettors, and compound and dissection microscopes.  Performs related responsibilities to support laboratory courses as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or a related field.  Must be able to work independently, and be responsive and proactive to the instructional requirements of multiple laboratory courses.  Willingness to learn and apply laboratory skills and techniques from the faculty.  The Biology faculty will teach the successful candidate skills and techniques as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to troubleshoot basic laboratory protocols. Strong organizational, time management and communication skills. Experience in managing undergraduate student assistants. Experience with sterile technique, solution preparation, live organism cultures, and basic lab safety procedures. Experience in managing a budget and placing purchase orders. 

 ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION:

Located in Atlanta, Georgia USA, the Department of Biology at Morehouse College is seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager to support our teaching laboratories. The applicant will work closely with the faculty to coordinate all purchasing, preparations, testing and maintenance of all materials and equipment needed for our teaching laboratories.  Each year, as many as 15 bench laboratory courses serving approximately 1200 students (200 biology majors and 1000 non-majors) are offered in 6 teaching laboratory rooms located in two buildings. The laboratory courses include three introductory biology majors courses, four introductory non-majors courses, and eight upper-level courses (cell biology, molecular genetics, plant sciences, microbiology, physiology, neurobiology, cancer biology, and environmental studies). The applicant will work on several courses simultaneously, coordinating with the faculty who teach those courses. The applicant must have strong knowledge of basic biological techniques such as sterile technique, solution calculations, plate pouring, live organism culturing, and safety procedures. Since our lab curricula change each semester and many of our laboratory courses are course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURESs), the applicant must be able to learn and troubleshoot new protocols and model systems. The applicant should have solid communication skills as they will work with faculty and manage undergraduate workers. Organizational skills and ability to work independently to anticipate potential problems and minimize them are important qualities for this position.
