Biology Instructor (Full-Time, Tenure-Track)

Reedley College

Providing instruction in Biology on the Reedley College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the full-time, tenure-track instructor will be responsible for:

  • Teaching both lecture and laboratory classes in biology for non-majors, life sciences, and human biology;
  • Properly using, storing, and maintaining scientific instruments used in teaching biology;
  • Teaching and employing proper health and safety protocols in the classroom, and laboratory environment;
  • Demonstrating specialized and technical tasks to assure efficient biology laboratory operations;
  • Evaluating adjunct instructors and ensuring the high quality of instruction provided by adjunct instructors;
  • Participating in the development, and maintenance of college curriculum and program development and/or revision, including program review and the development and assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs to improve student learning;
  • Communicating and collaborating successfully with administrators, faculty, staff, and students as part of an educational team;
  • Developing technology and curriculum used for classroom presentations and instruction;
  • Developing and updating curriculum and transfer degrees;
  • Participating in appropriate professional meetings and workshops;
  • Cooperating about scheduling classes between colleagues in the same disciplines;
  • Participating in student recruiting activities and campus associated outreach activities;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed;
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; and

  • Masters in any biological science; or
  • Bachelors in any biological science and masters in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine sciences; or
  • A valid California Community College Credential; or
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
  • Graduate coursework and teaching experiences at the secondary or post-secondary level in general biology, principles of zoology and botany, human biology and anatomy/physiology, microbiology, environmental science and biotechnology;
  • Experience teaching both lecture and laboratory biology courses at the secondary or post-secondary level;
  • Knowledge and use of current educational technology and multimedia presentation (computer use in lecture presentations and laboratory exercises, interactive video, etc.);
  • Demonstrated ability to reflect on and adjust instructional strategies to meet the needs of the students and increase student success;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient biology laboratory operations;
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and assisting students to succeed;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum in emerging areas;
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and a variety of teaching modalities including distance learning;
  • Capacity to contribute to the total operation of the instructional program including Department, Division, and College responsibilities;
  • Commitment to professional growth including demonstrated willingness to improving teaching methodology;
  • Demonstrated ability in developing successful instructional strategies for non-traditional or academically at-risk students; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:
178 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting annual salary is $70,302 – $105,838 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).
