Laboratory Services Technician

The University of Minnesota Rochester has an immediate opening for a Laboratory Services Technician. The Laboratory Services Technician is a dynamic role for an individual who enjoys achieving daily milestones to support learning activities in science-based disciplines. The purpose of this role is to support the needs of academic and teaching/learning research in a manner that supports an environment of respect, inclusiveness, collaboration, and professionalism which make up the core of the mission of the University of Minnesota Rochester. This bargaining unit position, job code 4925, is governed by the AFSCME Technical Unit 7 and is located in Rochester, Minnesota, reporting to the Director of Facilities and Operations. Responsibilities include: Daily coordination, preparation, and management of academic instructional laboratory space to meet the needs of UMR’s teaching/learning research priorities. Assisting faculty instructors in the coordination and management of laboratory experiments, including chemicals and solutions for chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, biology and physics. Procuring, preparing, storing and maintaining equipment and laboratory supplies for lecture and laboratory classes and experiments. Managing laboratory stock, inventory, and safety equipment, including oversight of inventory, from delivery to disposal. Maintaining compliance with all applicable safety and security regulations, including publication and dispersal of paper and digital reports as necessary. Maintaining and creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory activities. Performing regular safety inspections of equipment and chemical inventory, and addressing safety concerns as they arise. Directing and monitoring the work performed by student lab support staff. Minimum Qualifications: High School graduation plus two years college course work in an appropriate scientific field and a minimum of two years work experience in maintenance, repair and construction, machine shop, storage, and/or audio visual aids. Preferred Qualifications: BA/BS (preferred background in Chemistry) plus 2 years experience or a combination of education and work experience to equal 6 years. The candidate can demonstrate proven laboratory techniques and has a working knowledge of proper techniques related to chemical handling, storage, and hazardous waste disposal. General knowledge of laboratory safety practices and University of Minnesota rules and regulations. Proven efficacy in working with a team of diverse backgrounds, age, education, and socioeconomic status.
