Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology

Washington College

The Biology Department at Washington College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Biology to begin in August of 2024.

EXPECTATION

Washington College has a tradition of excellent undergraduate teaching. This appointment is for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in microbiology. A typical course load consists of two lectures and two labs each semester during the academic year (3/3 load). Teaching values in the department include a commitment to rigorous and inclusive, experiential education, development of innovative courses and the potential for engaging students both within and outside the classroom, including mentoring senior thesis students and contributing to departmental service, where appropriate. Individual laboratory space will be provided along with access to shared cell, tissue culture, and microscopy suites. Candidates will also have access to a rooftop greenhouse, aquaculture facility, research vessel on the Chester River, and the River and Field Campus, a 4,700-acre mixed-habitat field station.

The Department of Biology will seek to convert this position to a tenure-track hire beginning in August 2025. The conversion of this posted Visiting Assistant Professor to a tenure-track Assistant Professor will depend on budgetary approval and will be filled following a full candidate search.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology or closely related discipline. The candidate will be expected to instruct microbiology, new or existing advanced biology courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, a biology course for the general education curriculum, and other introductory courses as necessary. Ability to instruct microbiology (and the associated lab) is required, otherwise a candidate’s area of expertise is flexible with preference given to applicants that diversify the range of expertise offered by existing faculty in the Department of Biology.

APPLICATION

Candidates wishing consideration need to submit all the following application materials: (1) a cover letter, (2) CV, (3) statement of teaching philosophy, (4) statement of how the candidate plans to incorporate equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching, and (5) names of three professional references with contact information. Applications will be reviewed beginning February 16, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled.
