Senior Laboratory Instructor

The Department of Biology, Senior Laboratory Instructor is responsible for the development, organization and supervision of the department’s undergraduate teaching laboratories in consultation with faculty. These laboratories will provide undergraduate students with practical experience in basic and advanced techniques.
This position specifically focuses on the first-year general biology laboratories covering evolution, biodiversity, physiology and cell biology.
However, the holder of the position requires broad knowledge, skills and abilities to assist with the coordination of 300- and 400- upper level laboratories in diversity and physiology of plants and animals.
The upper-level labs may include analysis of data using “R” statistical software.
Responsibilities include independently developing lab exercises, writing and updating lab manuals, lab assignments, lab exams and setting the grading matrix for labs.
This position is responsible for the supervision and mentoring of the teaching assistant lab instructors many of whom are UVic graduate students gaining teaching experience for the first time. The position also directs the laboratory-related work of the Scientific Assistant and the hiring of term work study students.
The Senior Laboratory Instructor has a large administrative role in managing the logistical aspects of the lab, assisting students and lab instructors, dealing with student concerns and teaching and advising students and instructors as well as miscellaneous duties such as managing the effective use of course budgets, materials and equipment and participating in a variety of committees.
