Position Overview
Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor with dual appointment in the Departments of Biology & Environment, Geography, and Earth Sciences to begin September 1, 2023.
Major/Essential Functions
Gustavus faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the college and department. Currently, tenure-line Gustavus faculty have a 6-course equivalent teaching assignment. In their first year, the successful candidate will receive a reduced teaching assignment of five courses, plus one fully-compensated course release.
Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory Organismal Biology (a core course), intermediate level Conservation Biology (serving both Biology and Environmental Studies majors), and electives within Biology and/or EGE that may include aquatic or terrestrial ecology. Additional opportunities exist to contribute to core-level Biology courses and/or courses in an integrated liberal arts curriculum. The Biology core courses are multi-section; lectures and labs are taught by a team of 3-6 faculty with each instructor teaching their own section(s). The Organismal Biology team would benefit from having a non-animal-oriented person on the instruction team. This new faculty member would establish a research program with undergraduate collaborators in organismal, ecology, or conservation biology. The successful candidate will advise both Biology and Environmental Studies majors, and be a member of both the Biology and EGE Departments. The successful candidate will join College and Departmental efforts to develop equitable pedagogies and inclusive cultures.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in Biology, Plant Biology, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field by September 1, 2023
- Evidence of the ability to teach undergraduate classes and labs in courses related to those described in the major/essential functions of the position
- Demonstrated capacity to establish an independent research program that involves undergraduates at Gustavus Adolphus
- College addressing a question related to organismal biology, ecology and/or environmental studies
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional research, teaching, and/or non-profit/government agency experience
- Ability to bring non-animal and/or interdisciplinary perspectives to courses
- Evidence of advising and/or mentoring undergraduate students
