On May 14, 2015, Carrie Eaton, curator of collections at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Geology Museum, stands with the femur of what was formerly known as the Boaz Mastodon. Recent CT scans and radiocarbon dating of the bones — along with extensive review by Eaton of historical university documents, newspaper accounts and photographic records — indicates that a skeleton on display at the museum is likely a composite of parts from two different specimens: a mastodon from Boaz, Wis., and one from the former Anderson Mills, Wis., in Grant County. Analysis shows most of the fossil bone of the skeleton is from Anderson Mills. (Photo by Jeff Miller/UW-Madison)
